Simple heartburn is never something that is thought to ever come close to the more scaring disease, cancer. The process for which it affects our stomach system could never be completely understood. Some research shows that the bacteria in the esophagus and the stomach could lead to cancer.
There are two types of acid reflux bacteria that are found harmful to our system. One is the cancer causing Helicobacter Pylori found in the stomach walls and the other is a mixed group of organisms which thrives and grows in the esophagus.
Both are related to stomach and esophagus cancers.
Barett's Esophagus
Recently it has been proven that bacteria in the esophagus can cause cancer. It was found that it can contribute to the shifting of the normal esophageal cells. Instead of a smooth cell lining, the esophagus is transformed into a coarse wall.
This process is usually occurs in patients having acid reflux. Due to prolonged regurgitation, the lining of the esophagus is continually irritated leaving it into a condition called a Barett's esophagus. Acid reflux bacteria then grows into the esophageal lining contributing to further irritation possibility leading to cancer.
Helicobacter Pylori
Helicobacter pylori is an acid reflux bacteria caused by regurgitation and irritation of the stomach wall. When people experience frequent heartburn, the stomach produces more acid leading to ulcerations.
Having ulcers in the stomach walls allow such bacteria to grow. Helicobacter Pylori invades the stomach's normal flora, and is proven to be the cause of gastric cancer.
Acid Reflux Bacteria and Cancers
Two complications of acid reflux are proven to be cancer-causing. Cancer of the esophagus and the other is cancer of the stomach. Reflux may seem to be a simple problem since most people experience it from time to time.
But keep in mind that occasional reflux is different form frequent acid reflux. When the condition becomes more frequent, this suggests the need to consult the physician and have ourselves treated before any of the complications occur.
Although Acid reflux bacteria can be easily treated with antibiotics, the cancer has no means of any cure. This is warning to get your condition checked early when it becomes frequent. Regular medical check ups should be applied and any concerns raised.
