Many families grow garden plots, flowers and trees in their gardens. There are any number for creating a yard. Besides the potential for growing food and decorative plants, more and more, people are looking to invite birds to their yard. Viewing thesefeathered creatures hop around the property is a gift, nearly as satisfying as watching the garden develop.

Most birds are most likely to prefer natural areas that support trees, grasses and flowers, a yard is a perfect place for them. Trees provide roosts, providing the birds security from predatory animals and a place to raise their young. Even standing tree stumps and logs can attract birds, this is because insects use them as feeding spots and the birds eat the bugs.

Birds, like all other living thing require a water source. They will for their own sake congregate at places that offer them plenty of water. So, it's important that you give the birds you draw in with a water source. The water source can be either a hand dug or natural pond, creek, river or even a bird bath. Large rocks with depressions on their surface also make great holders for water.

A water source in your yard or garden will also attract insects that the birds will dine on. Insects are the main food source of lots of bird species and this should not be looked past. As gardeners know very well, insects are drawn to the plants in your garden. They will cause severe damage to your plants and need to be controlled. Birds are the best possible way to do this. They are organic, cause no pollution and their chirps fill the garden with sweet music.

Vegetarian birds are often fed with specially designed feeders. Some come with squirrel proofing, although those determined critters still find how to get in. Birds come in a variety of shapes and sizes and eat different types of seeds. Feeders for birds also are available in a number of styles and shapes from small liquid Hummingbird feeders to larger seed feeders for Blue Jays and other types of birds. If a gardener wants to invite a selection of birds, different kinds of feeders can be put around the garden for each type.

Having all the vegetation established, bird feeders set up and a water source established, lots of birds will be drawn to your yard. When they arrive, they will be happy to feed, drink and be happy all day long. Some of your birds will create nests in trees near by. But many of them will nest somewhere else if there are no good locations given to them.

Birds, like humans, have their preferences as to the type of house they call home. Most often, human constructed bird houses are preferred by Bluebirds, Robins, Chickadees, Wrens, House Finches, Flickers and Martins. By providing houses of the proper dimension and shape for each bird species, the homeowner gives the birds a safe nursery for their young. When the babies are growing, its mom and dad are able to find food near by home, thus keeping the baby within sight and very well fed.

At most yard and garden stores, birdhouses can be bought in a large variety of sizes, shapes and styles. Since birdhouses are typically quite simple, they can be easily created by the average person. It's even a project that a group of children, such as a scouting troop, can do. Having built and placed their own birdhouse, children and grown-ups alike will get a thrill out of seeing new birds move in.

To get the most out of your yard, birds are truly one of the best additions. They'll visit you if they can find the things they need. For years to come, the birds will come back to lay their eggs, raise their brood and behave as your own personal bug eliminators.
