The biggest bane for golfers across the world is the dreaded golf slice. There are two main causes for a slice, and understanding both of those causes will certainly be a large part of the cure. The first main cause of a slice is a swing from over the top that causes the clubhead to cut across the target line, and the second main cause is presenting a clubface that stays open while producing a left-to-right spin. So, here are five ways to stop slicing:
1. Check your grip! Grip the club too lightly and more than likely, you'll slice the ball. You can buy an elbow strap or wrist band that will help hold your hand in position so it will hold a correct position for your follow through, and they can really help you remember the correct way to hold your hands on the golf club.
2. Check your stance! You should be keeping your legs apart, about as wide as your shoulders, making sure your shoulders are aligned with your target. Your right food needs to point straight ahead while the left foot should be slightly tilted to the left. Practice a proper stance while making slight changes to it to get the idea how each little change can affect the direction of the ball.
3. Check your swing! A really great way to be able to watch yourself and to look for areas of improvement is to videotape yourself at a driving range. If you're able, record your movements from several angles, and then watch and re-watch the tapes to search for areas of improvement. Keep an eye on your body posture, your follow through, and the angle of your head when teeing off.
4. Check your ego! Ask your fellow players for pointers, and keep an eye on those players who have been successful in getting rid of their slice patterns. Watch their hands, their body language, and the placement of their shoulders at all times. Take a few lessons from the golf pro at your favorite course in order to get some real hands on experience in knowing how to take the remedial steps to correct a slice.
5. Check out a book or two. Read some of the many offerings from the brightest and the best that tell how they battled the slice and won! Look at the pictures and make sure you are following all of the basic advice before you head on to the harder elements of correcting your slice.
Remember, of course, that researching or reading all about the techniques that will cure you of a slice is great, but the real secret is to get out there and practice, practice, practice what you learn! With more time spent improving your grip, stance and swing, you'll be amazed at how soon your slice disappears and you gain more control of your game!
