In spanish "Salsa" means sauce, but to many others, it is a hot fiery style of latin dancing. Typically the music involves complex African percussion rhythms based around the Son clave or Rumba clave. Salsa can be a partner dance or recognized by solo steps. Other forms of Salsa dancing can be in groups of couples, with frequent exchanges of partners also know as "Casino de Rueda". We will share some important elements of salsa dancing including some basic tips and tricks to take with you on the dance floor.

Having the right shoes for salsa dancing is very important. There are many different types and styles of shoes out there on the market. For men, most importantly, would be to have shoes with leather soles. Avoid open shoes like sandals, slippers, etc. This type of footwear can be detrimental if your partner misses a step and lands on your toes with her heels. Ooch! Solid high heel dance shoes seem to be the standard for women. Find ones that provide support for your feet. Remember to break them in to avoid getting foot blisters. Not Fun!

Before you hit that dance floor, visit a dance studio for salsa classes. It's more important for the guy to attend these classes since the expectation is higher for him to make the girl look good on the dance floor. Sometimes you will find some night clubs offering free salsa lessons before opening up the club. You can really take advantage of this since it is free and you will more than likely find a dance partner that will be at the same level as you.

Ladies, your job is to learn how to be creative in the confines of following your guy. Track his movements, match his arm tension, don't wave around like you're about to go under for the third time. Bobbing or bouncing is not really the idea here - keep your back straight, your arms tight, and make your hips do all the work.

And for both sexes, avoid ponytails - when you're that close and you're spinning, you don't want a lethal whack from a whirling hunk of hair!

The important thing to do is relax and have fun. Watch other, more experienced dancers as you're trying to make your first moves. After a few turns on the dance floor, it will become second nature and you'll be a salsa sensation.

Last thing, always bring a hand towel if you plan on dancing salsa all night because it can get very hot!
