Although we are still rather far away from the technology we are inspired by in such programs as Back to the Future and The Jetsons, there is no denying that several products in every day life do come from such programs. Anything from the high standard mobile earpieces used in Star Trek to the downward thrusters on Thunderbird Two are now common in Bluetooth Gadgets and the Air force’s Fighter Jets.
However, now and again there comes a little piece of technology that is quite simple when you delve into it, but a fantastic success none the less. Such things as trainers with one wheel in the heel, Tamagotchi and Digital Photo key rings. These small and simple designs incorporate modern thinking and technology into every day life.
The latest craze hitting young adults in the United States is a piece of software developed between Nike and Nokia. Between the two companies they have created technology that allows the user to take a snap shot of a specific object, such as a flower, graffiti or tattoo and send the image via Media message to Nike’s designers. The image is then superimposed onto a style of trainer that the customer selects from images on the mobile phone, where they customise the shoes with colours, laces of their choice etc. When finished, they can package the design off to Nike and await their trainers in the post.
This simple way of personalising your footwear is being accepted with open arms by American customers, and Nokia are keen to pledge the success to clothing companies as they think the software will be even more popular if you are able to adapt it to T-Shirts etc.
We are yet to receive this software in the United Kingdom but if other technology advancements are to go by, it should not be long to go before we can start snapping pictures of our favourite objects and sport them on our “sneakers”!
