There are many reasons for reading; one can find information about particular interests e.g. travel, health, hobbies, religion and much much more. The most enjoyable is as a pastime, you will never be lonely if you can lose yourself in a good book. Avid readers will tell you there is never enough time to read all the books that will be of interest to you. Personally I like to read authors, I keep checking to find out when the next book, from a particular author that I like, is to be published. It is also interesting and fun to try new authors. Writing styles vary and some styles of writing may not be appealing to you. It is a good idea to ask family and friends what they have read and enjoyed, they may also be willing to lend their books to you.
1. Pick a book you think you will be interested in.
It is best to stay away from books about your profession. A book should be an escape from your daily routine.
2. Start at the local library, used book stores or book sales.
This is an inexpensive way to learn about authors, subjects and styles you might like.
3. Make sure your book has enough pages to keep your interest.
Reading will become a better pastime if you can really delve into a book.
4. Read the prologue and the first chapter. Starting a new book takes some time to get used to the style of the author.
As mentioned, it will take time to learn what material really interests you. It is necessary to read enough of a book to know if you can become interested in the content and style of the writer.
5. Be consistent in your reading don't go more than two or three days without picking up your book.
This will enable you to remember what you did read and be able to carry on without rereading any parts.
6. Choose a comfortable place to read.
You will need adequate light and a comfortable chair. Reading outdoors when the weather is warm is also very enjoyable.
7. When the book is finished it may take a few days before getting started at another.
A really good book is hard to finish, you can feel very lost as the characters become so real during the read. On occasion it will take some time before you are able to let it go and begin another story.
