Identity theft is a crime that is getting worse nowadays. The number of cases with this crime is increasing. A lot of people are doing this, even cops, government and other people.
Let us assume a person name Dick James makes fake documents calling himself Terry Johns. Now he can make all sorts of documents he wishes to. He takes loans worth hundreds of thousands of dollars, he gets several credit cards and makes several purchases on credit, takes money through ATM and the like.
Now it is possible that Dick has already took assets worth hundreds of thousands of dollars or maybe over a million dollars from banks amongst other businesses. Now who is going to pay for all this? Surely the bank, he has taken everything on credit and is expected to pay off his loans and the credits he has taken.
Now supposing one good day he is no longer in the city and out of reach from any person who is a part of the bank he signed up with. His name was a fake and so were his documents. Surely, they did have his photograph but how do you know whether he didn't shave his beard of or didn't put a wig on. Even if he didn't, where is it expected that the police should look out?
He may just go overseas and settle in a cheaper county like India or Pakistan and that is that. His life is made. But now the businesses and the banks suffer big time, they have lost a million bucks, something a little hard to digest.
Now once in a while they may be able to take the loss, but what if this starts to happen every now and then. Of course no bank would tolerate it besides it won't be very easy for the bank to afford such a loss either, would it?
So businesses suffer greatly in monetary respects besides all their records all somewhat washed and so is their trust and confidence in their customers which has grave implications on customers who are genuine. So the company stands a loss even at the reputation front.
Identity theft has serious implications that affect businesses rather adversely and do pose serious problems for them which are not very easy to get over, even for them!
