It is impossible to know just how essential your cell phone is to your happiness until you are without it. Sure, it's annoying at times. People call you constantly- by carrying a cell phone you are marked as being easy to contact, and therefore available all the time. If you simply choose to stop answering your phone because its constant ringing is driving you crazy, you will be seen as either paranoid for screening your calls or antisocial for not returning your messages promptly. I myself have often fantasized about tossing my shrieking cell phone off a bridge, or under the nearest bus, and keeping up all my correspondence through soulfully written snail mail letters.
However, I live in modern America. I have a cell phone because not having a cell phone means a whole new kind of isolation. You will lose opportunties and miss out on last minute delights by not having one, because everyone else has one. It's simply a fact of modern living. And just try traveling without a cell phone, and you'll learn a little bit about the seventh circle of hell. You can't call to reserve a hotel room, or check on a transit ticket confirmation, or cancel a reservation last minute (which will mean you'll get charged for the room anyway). It's simply awful trying to relax when you can't take care of the minute details of existance away from home.
I know what you're thinking. Using your cell phone in another country is virtually impossible. The SIM cards don't work, you simply can't use your phone. In the event that your SIM card is compatible, your international rates will put you under the poverty line. They really are excruciating, and they change all the time. However, help is available, and it's called international cell phones. These wonderful little inventions work in any country, without the hassle of buying a new SIM card each time you cross a national boundary. The call rates are more expensive than your common US phone, but much more affordable than any other option. If you don't want to invest in ownig an international phone, look into an international cell phone rental. All the benefits and none of the commitment. If you think your destination is too remote to enjoy the perks of being plugged in, think again. Satellite cell phones work, incredibly, almost anywhere on the globe. So go ahead and book that Antarctic tour.
